Instead of face-checking pitch-black ravines, you get a ranged lighting tool that lets you scout the area before you even drop down.

The mechanics are exactly what you want for a fast-paced survival run. You load your ammo, aim into a dark mineshaft, and fire. The custom flare projectile flies just like a standard arrow and physically sticks to whatever surface it hits. The second it lands, it lights up the surrounding terrain for 120 seconds, throwing off realistic sparks and smoke while it burns. Once the two-minute timer is up, it leaves behind a spent shell that automatically cleans itself up, so you do not have to worry about entity lag ruining your world.



You can also use it as an offensive tool in a pinch. Hitting hostile mobs directly with a flare deals immediate fire damage and ignites them, giving you a solid ranged option to chip away at skeletons or zombies before they close the gap. The biggest upside is that the gun itself has infinite durability, meaning you never have to waste iron at an anvil to repair it.

Getting this setup in early survival is incredibly cheap. The gun just takes a mix of copper, iron, redstone, and a stick. You can easily mass-produce the ammo too, since combining gunpowder, paper, and redstone spits out eight flares at a time.
